Cyber-security is an increasing challenge for the shipping industry and Nautilus is stepping in to help members by co-hosting a special training webinar for seafarers in September. With high profile ransomware attacks on shipping companies such as Maersk and COSCO, operators are under pressure to improve their cyber-security and to develop improved measures to protect their systems from attack. However, there is evidence that many companies are not doing enough to educate seafarers about the risks of cyber-attacks or how to avoid them. Research by Nautilus showed that 86% of crew had never received any cyber security training from their employers. The Union is teaming up with security experts Appsecco and their specialist maritime division ShipSecure, to hold a webinar to raise awareness of cyber security issues onboard.

On Thursday 7th March at 1pm we'll be collaborating with NCSC for a second time to explore the 5 steps every charity should take to improve their cyber security. The first webinar of this series focused on the threats charities face from cyber attacks and the effect this could have on their organisation. In this session, we’ll look at the simple, free or low cost steps every charity should be taking to protect themselves online.

New research from Carbon Black shows that cyberattacks are becoming more frequent and more sophisticated, as nation state actors and crime syndicates continue to leverage fileless attacks, lateral movement, island hopping and counter incident response in an effort to remain undetected. This issue is compounded by resources and budgeting. Not only is there a major talent deficit in cybersecurity, there is also a major spending delta. What’s more, according to Carbon Black’s research, businesses are largely unaware about the scale, scope, and sophistication of modern attacks.
